We respect and need good law enforcement practices to maintain a safe environment. Unfortunately, some police officers have gone beyond the authority they have and have applied excessive force to citizens that they come in contact with. In other words, the police have used more physical force than they needed to use to lawfully arrest someone or to control an ongoing incident. Often, an individual is arrested and has had his liberty taken away by law enforcement without justification.

We are proud that we have held law enforcement agencies accountable for either failing to train their officers, or for keeping officers on the force who should not have been left with the power vested in police officers. Our office succeeded in having a law enforcement agency adopt a policy of training its law enforcement officers to properly deal with people who have special needs because of their communicative impairments.
